The success and long history of Loewe’s leather bomber jacket

Jonathan Anderson Loewe hit the bullseye with its leather bomber jacket. Celebrities that have worn it (and Instagrammed) include: Kendall JennerHailey BieberTaylor Russel and Lori Harvey. It costs 5,900 euro and, according to the press, stocks are running low due to high demand. The product managed to bring back the bomber-jacket shape as a versatile item properly revisited in leather.

“Bomber jackets are back and this time they’re (quite literally) bigger than ever”, writes Marie Claire. The jacket made with “satin and gloss lamb nappa” (as described by Loewe) debuted in March 2022, as part of the Fall/Winter 22-23 collection. Loewe launched two versions (in leather and nylon) and two colors: military green and black. Just a few photos from famous individuals on social media led it to become one of the most sought-after items of the winter season.

The history

Some noted the resemblance with the Round Jacket by Yeezy Gap. But maybe we should be looking even further back. Specifically to WWI, when British aviators of the RFC (Royal Flying Corps) wore heavy jackets to protect themselves from the cold and wind. These jackets were called Bomber because they were used by air force bombardiers. The model became famous in the 80s and then remained, with some ups and downs, part of the men’s wardrobe.

Sculpture-Jacket

To find the first Sculpture-Jacket one needs to go back to the 30s. It was British stylist (later naturalized a US citizen) Charles Wilson Brega James to present the “first soft sculpture”, as it was called by Dalí. The piece is now exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Charles James created the basis for a new outwear concept but then, as pointed out by Nss Magazine, it was American designer Norma Kamali, in the 70s, to invent the iconic coat Sleeping Bag. Last, Jonathan Anderson, known to add an extravagant touch to classic items, managed to offer it once again and create a must-have product.
