Designers leaving. Designers joining. Among the latest is Matthew M. Williams, who will no longer head Givenchy‘s style office as of 1 January 2024, and no successor has been named. Incidentally, a few days ago the same designer gave up control of the 1017 Alyx 9SM brand, which he had founded, to Hong Kong billionaire Adrian Cheng. Among the formers, however, there is, as we anticipated here, Matteo Tamburini, who will be the new creative director of Tod’s women’s and men’s collections. He takes the place of Walter Chiapponi, who left in September to join Blumarine in the same position.
Williams leaves Givenchy
Matthew M. Williams (right in the photo from his Instragram profile) arrived at Givenchy in June 2020. The brand points out that his first collections were received less than enthusiastically by critics, weakening his legitimacy. But Williams has “modernised the entire product offering, in particular with the iconic Voyou bag, launched in early 2023”. According to the fashion house itself, Matthew M. Williams’ modern style, inspired by streetwear, has enabled Givenchy to reach American customers, thanks to the appreciation of US hip-hop and sports stars. Fashion Network reports that Givenchy’s results improved in 2022: despite a slight loss, sales reached EUR 302 million (261 million in 2021).
Tamburini joins Tod’s
The rumour was correct. Tod’s group has identified the now former Bottega Veneta Matteo Tamburini (left in the photo from his LinkedIn profile) as the new creative director of the flagship brand, Tod’s. He will make his debut with the presentation of the women’s Fall-Winter 2024/25 collection during the upcoming Milan Fashion Week in February 2024. “His modern vision of high quality and Italian lifestyle will certainly bring added value to our brand”, commented Diego Della Valle, CEO of the Tod’s group, in the note issued by the company. For his part, the designer said he was “honoured and enthusiastic” about his appointment. “Tod’s is a brand that is closely linked to my origins and memories”, Tamburini concluded.
