Hedi Slimane separates from Celine: will she land at Chanel?

Celine and Hedi Slimane are separating, as was announced recently by the fashion brand, which thus confirmed the rumors that had been circulating for some time. The next step is to see if Slimane will land at Chanel.

Celine separates from Hedi Slimane

Hedi Slimane is no longer the creative, artistic and image director of Celine, a brand controlled by French giant LVMH. The 1968-born designer, who was born in Paris to Italian mother and Tunisian father, had been at the designer’s helm of the label since January 2018. During his tenure, Slimane more than doubled the fashion house’s annual sales to nearly 2.5 billion euros, according to analyst estimates cited by Business of Fashion.

A (very) expected farewell

The news of the separation had been widely expected. According to the latest rumors circulating last week during Paris Fashion Week, Slimane had already left Celine and had not worked in his studio for months. Then again, rumors had already been circulating in early April about a difficult relationship between LVMH boss Bernard Arnault and the French designer. The separation was being taken for certain among insiders. So Slimane’s future is unlikely to be in a brand controlled by Arnault.

Will she land at Chanel?

Before Celine, Slimane had curated Dior’s men’s collection from 2000 to 2007. In March 2012 the designer had landed at Saint Laurent, only to leave in 2016. After a two-year sabbatical, Slimane had returned to the fashion system with Celine, taking over from Phoebe Philo. Will the next step be at Chanel? It sure looks like a potential candidate.
