Here is the colour of the year 2023. “It is powerful and inspiring,” says Pantone, who created it with the Metaverse in mind, so much so that they renamed it the “Magentaverse”. According to Leatrice Eiseman, CEO of the Pantone Colour Institute, Viva Magenta 18-1750 “galvanises our spirit, helping us build our inner strength”. A shade that craves life.
“Courageous and fearless”
For the colour of the year 2023, Pantone opted for a “bold” shade of carmine red. It is certainly not the easiest colour to wear. “Viva Magenta 18-1750 vibrates with vitality and vigour. It is a shade rooted in nature, descended from the red family, and expressive of a new signal of strength,” writes Pantone. “Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative”.
Inspired by the red of the cochineal
“This colour”, writes the New York Times, “is not the aggressive synthetic of Barbie, not the intense luxury of Valentino haute couture, not the tired salmon of Millennials”. What is it then? As the NYT’s Jason Farago argues, it is “a saturated shade that honks at the threshold of fuchsia, definitely not organic but not entirely electric”. Viva Magenta is descended from the red family and inspired by the red of the cochineal. “In this age of technology, we seek to draw inspiration from nature and what is real,” Pantone writes.
