Elodie’s upcycling for shoe.shoe: Italian leather and manufacturing

First, the age-old question: leather or alternative materials? Then the choice: “After having evaluated the pros and cons of the two solutions, having read a lot of material, I decided to use leather due to its quality and durability”. These are the words of Elodie Verdan, young designer ex-Louis Vuitton, who launched French brand shoe.shoe. the second question is: Where to manufacture the shoes. In this case (as well), Elodie picked Italy.

Elodie’s choice

Elodie Verdan is a young designer who worked at Louis Vuitton, where she focused on textiles and men’s jerseys. After the experience, she chose to follow her passion: designing shoes, and in June 2021 she opened her brand shoe.shoe. She made her choices and, supported by some incubators, she selected materials across a range of leather and new generation alternatives. In the end, leather was picked thanks to its durability and quality. “To make my work as virtuous as possible, I got in touch with a supplier that saves the leftover materials of luxury brands”, writes the designer.

Production

The second big choice was where to produce, and the designer chose Italy once more. Elodie Verdal entrusted the manufacturing process to Lumal Shoes in Montopoli in Val d’Arno (Pisa), which produced the first model for the brand: the Idealo boot, available in 3 color variants (in photo). It’s worth mentioning that shoe.shoe uses, in these initial launching phases, upcycled leather bought online but tanned in Italy.

Absolute transparency

The last choice she made for her brand is transparency. In fact, shoe.shoe publishes online the detailed costs it incurs when manufacturing a model. This aforementioned boots costs: 96 in labor, 36 for production costs, 41 euro for the leather, 5 for packaging, 10 for transportation and logistical costs, 4 for accessories. The total is 192 euro, to which is applied a 2.18 multiplier. The final price is of 420 euro.
