Melina C’s key to success is simple: Leather and Italian manufacturing. “There is a unique know-how in Italy, as well as a secular tradition, ability to work leather and the passage of knowledge from one generation to another”, says the founder of brand Melina C, Melina Cervesato, Belgian with descendants from Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Leather and Italian manufacturing
Melina Cervesato loves touching the raw material she uses with her hands. In an interview with a sosoir.lesoir.be, the Belgian designer tells the story of her career and explains her stylistic choices. One over all the rest: having focused only on Italy for the manufacturing of her brand’s products. “We don’t design the models ourselves, rather we collaborate with professionals and their stylists, who design and make the products for us. We only work on leather handbags and make them in three sites in Italy – she explains to sosoir.lesoir.be -. Normally I go there at least once a month to visit tanneries, meet our craftsmen and follow the creation and production processes. But with Covid everything slowed down”.
In the heart and strategy
Cervesato didn’t choose Italy just because her heart pushed her to do so. She is tied to the country enough to her grandparents’ country that she gave her handbags common names from the Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto regions. “There is a unique know-how in Italy, an historic tradition, and the passage of knowledge from one generation to another – she explains -. Our laboratories will never work the same way as an assembly line does. Only artisans, families specialized in only a few models. Plus, Italy has style, Italians are always first in line, always at least one year ahead of global trends. There is nothing to say other than Italy remains a guarantee of quality”.
