COVER STORY
THE BEIJING TRIP
No surprises
APLF offers Italian tanners (and others) the confirmation that Beijing requires an always-changing approach. Because “Chinese brands are for the Chinese market”, they are no longer “the same target as before”. And they have changed even more….
Beijing’s intermediate phase
China’s long transformation process achieves the first results, after ridding itself of the title of ‘world’s factory’. The new picture shows many opportunities for local leather, but also many challenges.
Chinese gap
Beijing: consumers’ trust is at an all-time high, but consumption is slowing down. It is a result of a government strategy. But globalized luxury doesn’t seem to be impacted by this contradiction.
Beijing’s unforeseen stop
China, with the so-called ‘waste ban’ puts a stop to the import of solid waste. But in the disposition leather by-products are also, surprisingly, included: with great damage to Italian tanneries doing business in the people’s republic.
SUMMARY
ITALIAN TANNERY
Dani e Volpi
The tanning productive axis between Veneto and Tuscany is strengthened. After Gruppo Mastrotto, Dani e Volpi Srl is born: a company based on “a synergic agreement, not only under the production profile”.
ICEC/CSCB AGREEMENT
There is strength in certifications
Italy and Brazil sign a partnership agreement that promotes “the reciprocal recognition of voluntarily disclosed certifications”. The goal: to provide security for the sector and to sustainability, “to start a new phase for our relationship and reciprocal transparency”.
INDIA
Stahl for the Ganges River
The chemicals’ multinational invests 900,000 euros in the project that aims at helping Kanpur reduce its environmental impact. Michael Costello, sustainability director, explains to us the project’s objectives and strategies.
USDA REPORT
Thin cows
2018 will be a down-year for the community’s agro-food industry. The chain’s future depends heavily on the price of milk. And the Irish unknown carries weight. New Zealander downturn. Australia’s numbers.
THE FLYING LEATHER
From sky to sky
The leather interiors’ segment (and non-leather) doesn’t stop surprising. Adient takes off. Poltrona Frau imitates (but in its own way). Emirates invest 150 million dollars in 10 Boeing aircraft interiors.
COUNTERFEITING
Fake as drugs
The interest of the Asian criminal world in the commercialization counterfeited goods. The result of the ‘China truck’ investigation. More seizures in the USA, Ferragamo gets a large sum in reparation.
The chinese boss’s business
Bilateral shipments Rome-Beijing passing through Hong Kong. Handbags to check, buy, and sell. All within customs’ checks and seizures.
AMERICAN SHOES
Cannibal sneaker
“The line between sport shoes and casual ones keeps on getting blurred”, say operators in the USA, who are finding out that sneakers eat in the quotas of more technical footwear and influence the more “traditional” models. Meanwhile, heels disappear. “More than boots”. Selfridges invests.
BETWEEN GERMANY AND RUSSIA
German flattening
Fairs at Düsseldorf and Munich demonstrate that the German market of footwear had adjusted to all the trends: the price request, the sneaker, the online.
Moscow’s tiredness
Few smiles for Italian shoemakers at Mosshoes and oObuv. Buyers focused on price. Consumers with no liquidity, bad weather conditions. And customs regulations make the situation even worse.
