17 arrested for smuggling bovine hides in China’s Guangzhou region, where border authorities have arrested smugglers that had 72 million USD worth of bovine hides. According to local sources the smugglers imported the goods by falsifying the Bill of Lading.
17 arrested for smuggling bovine hides
17 people were stopped by Guangzhou’ border authorities. As reported by Xinhua’s press agency, authorities believe the smugglers to be part of 4 distinct groups all smuggling bovine hides. All arrested are Chinese nationals from various provinces in the South and East of the country. Preliminary findings show how the goods purchased abroad were smuggled in the country as “material to be transformed”, rather than its proper code as per China’s law. In fewer words, fake receipts were emitted where the hides were sold as other goods.
329.96 tons of leather
Huangpu’s authorities, assisted by the departments of Public Safety of Zhejiang and Fujian, put an end to this operation with 319 agents active in the cities of Dongguan, Guangzhou, Wenzhou, Xiamen and Quanzhou. The warehouses where the smuggled goods were located contained 329.96 tons of leather ready to be sold on the local market. All the merchandize has been confiscated for a value 500 million Yuan, or 72 million USD.
