Removal of hazardous chemicals waste in tanning, footwear and textile industrial processing is the aim of Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC), the project implemented by the namesake foundation. The programme was presented at Lineapelle93 yesterday, along with the roadmap and tools put forth to the 70 parties engaged in the project, among whom UNIC and ICEC. “The roadmap is based on three major areas and two cross ones”, points out Christina Raab, in charge of the project implementation. Actions to be taken will be a consistent updating of the list of hazardous banned chemicals, the reduction of environmental pollution and the setting of shared standards for waste management. Paramount importance has been given to the list of restricted manufacturing substances (MRSL) on the way to a sustainable management of substances. “Another key tool is Gateway, a large database which provides storage updating”, adds Graham Storrie, who is in the Board of Trustees. By using some filters, Gateway enables to verify various products data, formerly analysed according to previous standards and taking into account the MRSL list.
