American leather’s 2021: Raw hides do well, wet blue does better

The revenue of American leather grows. LHCA (Leather and Hide Council of America) stated that the export of raw hides for the tanning industry in 2021 grew by 28% on yearly basis in volume and by +67% in value. In the same period, wet blue recorded a +53% on both fronts.

Raw material performances

US leather is living an upward trend. According to LHCA the country exported 30.3 million raw bovine hides in 2021, up 28% on the 23.7 million of 2020. Foreign revenue, meanwhile, reached 959.5 million USD, or +67% on the 574.8 million of 2020. China (+34%) remained the top client, while Italy lost ground, importing 94.795 raw hides (-39%) during the period. In terms of value, purchases made by Italian companies grew 3%, from 3.56 to 3.67 million.

Semi-finished

Semi-finished products also had a positive year. US-based tanneries exported over 4.4 million pieces of wet blue (+53%), generating 451.2 million in sales. In this case as well, China dominates the scene (131.2 million USD, +68%), while Italy purchased 1.3 million pieces (+63%) for a value of 130.5 million USD (+47%).
