Canada fails to meet expectations: bovine segment performing poorly and negative outlooks on slaughtering

Not only did Canada fail to meet expectations, but even worse, the country had the worst results in the last 28 years. Contrary to expectations by the country’s National Statistics Institute, the bovine segment lost 1% in value, and the outlook is now negative for 2018 as well. Ottawa’s office of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), claims that the negative performance has been caused by the slow progress of the repopulation process of livestock, and the higher sales of live animals in the USA, where costs to raise animals are lower. Slaughtering is supposed to also slow and decrease in Canada in the near future, while production will stay in the green thanks to the higher weight of the animals farmed. According to USDA, mortality rate of livestock in the sector also played a part on the segment’s downturn: the number of farms has decreases 17% from 2010 to today.
