Too many containers do not pass tests: The US suspend imports of Brazilian raw meat

Last Tuesday the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) suspended the import of raw meat from Brazil. The measure will be in effect – they explain from Washington – until Brazilia will be able to meet the right requirements. Since last March, when the “Carne Fraca” case broke out, the States stepped up health checks on meat batches from Brazil: 11% (for goods worth more than 2 million euros) was rejected (the average of the drops for meat from other sources is 1%). According to Reuters, China (the first commercial outlet of Brazilian meat before the European Union) would not be considering similar restrictions, but for months it would slow down purchases, as well as Egypt and Chile. For the Brazilian agro-industry, which sees JBS as its leading actor in the case of the Lava Jato case, this constitutes a further problem.
