Chanel relies on 1,000 suppliers, half of whom are Italians. How about shoes? They are all made in Italy. Vuitton makes use of leather for 3 reasons, claims CEO Michael Burke Il Sole 24 Ore has published an article about it today. Its headline has drawn our attention quite immediately because of a bunch of key words, which prove to be extremely “sensitive” to us. Here it is: “Fully sustainable 100%, from raw materials to selling stores”. The article is an interview given by Michael Burke, Chief Executive Officer of the French fashion house. Taking his start from a general remark, he then got closer, to a much more relevant extent, to leather area. He therefore highlighted the 3 reasons why Louis Vuitton makes use of leather. We could also tell you about the rest of the interview (which you can read by clicking on this link), but we just report, one after another, each of the 3 reasons mentioned above. Vuitton makes use of leather for 3 reasons: here is the first one Says Burke: “We have stated we care about animal welfare; we do not want to give up using leather, fur nor exotic hides. We have made such decision for three reasons. First, because leather tanning industry has been traditionally a circular economy model. In fact, several hides we make use of for manufacturing bags and shoes are a waste product coming from food industry. If they were not further employed in the textile-apparel-fashion supply industry, they would turn into a scrap to get disposed of. Reason number two Burke has then moved on to reason number two: “Animals bred in farm houses, which currently work for Vuitton, have been relying, for a very long while, on some protocols, externally certified, which require and impose ethical treatment alongside the welfare of animals and those who work with them”. Reason number three “Such is the third reason – wrapped up Burke –: homo sapiens has successfully managed to use and process leather and fur for ages. Still nobody has found any raw materials which prove more suitable for the role given to clothes and accessories, that is, protection and adornment”. Could not be more crystal clear….
