“Production designers consider leather scraps to be little valuable, yet leather is a precious material”. Not to be wasted then. Christopher Bailey, fashion designer at Burberry, expounds the concept on which the English brand has based their joint action with Elvis & Kresse, a leather goods company, headquartered in London, specialised in manufacturing high-end accessories made of recycled materials. For 5 years Burberry will give out to their partner 120 tons of leather scraps, bound to be wasted otherwise. Profits resulting from sales, managed by Elvis & Kresse, will be partly (50%) ploughed back in the company business growing, whereas the remainder will support circular economy development projects. “In the room where they cut leather, we collect leather scraps from the floor, as they look little valuable – they point out on Elvis & Kresse website -: we sew them up, by hand, one by one, so we turn them into new leather”.
