Spin 360 estimates the accurate LCA figure for cowhide and Higg Materials Sustainability Index (Higg MSI) is forced to revise its tables. First, by cutting the material impact assessment by 55/67%. And, then, by reducing the score for cowhide by 60% (dropping from 36.8 points to 14.6) on the Global Warming Potential scale. “We are happy not only for the revision of the data, which were incorrect, but for the affirmation of the scientific method”, comments Federico Brugnoli, CEO of Spin 360, with satisfaction.
”Because the green transition is not possible unless there is quality data. This is a further step toward a scientific approach to materials’ sustainability. As always for us, the result of an LCA is only the beginning of the work. Instead, the most interesting part lies in defining and fine-tuning improvement pathways and roadmaps that can lead to reducing the impacts of international products and supply chains”.
Turning the tables on Higg MSI
Spin 360, responding to requests from Leather Working Group and Leather Naturally, collected data from 45 factories from 18 countries and analyzed 92 cowhide products (of all types: accessories, furniture and car interiors). It was on the basis of this wealth of information that the Milan-based agency produced the largest aggregate LCA (life cycle analysis) calculation of the material, which was then submitted for third-party verification. Precise data, we said, which submitted to Higg MSI’s attention forced the index, whose method was deeply challenged between 2022 and 2023 by public and private entities, to revise its leather assessments in the latest update.
