“Interest in sustainability and voluntary certification remains very high from the entire supply chain: tanneries, contractors, manufacturers, chemists. The results of our certification activities can be considered very satisfactory. For example, thanks to the particular growth of some environmental, chemical schemes and to traceability and code of conduct”. This were the words of Sabrina Frontini, Director of ICEC. The Certification Institute for the Leather Area held its Annual Meeting, outlining strategies and new horizons.
Renewals, admissions, new members
First of all, ICEC “renewed its presidency”, reads a note. “The institute confirmed Paola Arosio, representative of CNMI (National Chamber for Italian Fashion), as head of its Board of Directors. The position of vice-president, on the other hand, marks the entry of Diodato De Maio, tanner and owner of DMD Solofra. Carlo Brondi, representing CNR (National Research Council), is confirmed in the role of chairman of the Committee for Safeguarding Impartiality”. On the other hand, “from the point of view of the community members, ICEC welcomed NWF (National Wildlife Federation) and the Tuscan tanning contractors’ association ASSA among its associates”. “Cotance (the European confederation of national tanning associations), Veneto Leather District and the University of Salerno” have also joined.
Strategies and new horizons for ICEC
ICEC has long since expanded its operational horizons to include foreign supply chains (Turkey, Serbia, Spain, China, Sweden, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, France, and Germany). This way, explains Frontini, “it enhances its mission of strengthening commercial activities and synergy at the service of the entire supply chain”. A mission pursued “in the interest of brands, tanneries, end consumers, subcontractors, chemists, laboratories, and technology producers”. But, also, towards “the new supply chains introduced by the newly-associated trade associations. In recent years there have been continuous meetings with national and European luxury fashion houses”. The objective: “To illustrate the sustainability of the sector and related certifications, and to agree on recognition and harmonisation of supplier qualification criteria”.
