There is still to talk about EUDR, the Anti-Deforestation Regulation launched by the European Union and which has triggered a storm of reaction from many continental industries. Starting with the tanning industry. Well, as had been announced – and as UNIC – Italian Tanneries communicates in a note – “the EU Council and the European Parliament have reached an agreement on the proposal to postpone the date of application of the regulation by 12 months”. Black smoke, however, for some substantial amendments.
The agreement for the postponement is there, but…
“Parliament’s amendments”, writes UNIC, ”to create a new category of countries with no risk of deforestation are unfortunately not included in the text of the agreement. This is not good news. Far from it”. However, UNIC continues, “during the review of the regulation, due by June 30, 2028, the Commission will commit to a future assessment of simplified requirements for countries that have demonstrated effective and sustainable forest management practices and present no risk of deforestation”.
What happens and what will happen
The agreement will now have to be approved by Parliament and the Council before being published in the Official Gazette. “The goal,” UNIC concludes, ”is to allow the measure to enter into force before the date of application of the current regulation: December 30, 2024). These text of the agreement “has been voted on ENVI Commission, and then be definitively confirmed at the last plenary of the year, scheduled for Dec. 16-19. Finally, according to the Commission’s announcement, the Information System (IS) in which companies will register due diligence declarations should go live on December 4, 2024”.
