Nonogasta sees black smoke. According to local sources, Chinese Chery pulled out from saving Curtume CBR. The Asian automotive group should invest in Argentina, but in another province. Chery allegedly decided to pull out due to the “tannery’s distance from the harbor, lack of industrial promotion and the environmental problems”.
Saving Curtume CBR
Chery will not save Curtume CBR, according to the tannery’s workers. They were hoping the Chinese investors to save them. As reported by fenix951.com.ar, the workers’ spokesperson, Adriana Jaime, claimed that Chery chose to invest in the Chaco region. “We found out that the company won’t proceed, and so we lost another opportunity – she says -. Chery won’t invest in us because of the tannery’s distance from the harbor, lack of industrial promotion and the environmental problems”. That being said, always according to the union’s sources, Chery’s project may still include some actions for Curtume CBR. Not now, but at some point. “Chery would open a new plant to make vehicles in Buenos Aired and the tannery would make the necessary leather – she continues -. But this is very long-term, because the plant isn’t even open yet”.
Hopes
The news first appeared in Argentina’s media in the beginning of May. During a meeting with Argentina’s ambassador Sabino Vaca Narvaja, Chery’s president announced an investment to develop electric vehicles and in the naval segment of the South American country. Something that should also implicate the meat and tanning industry of Nonogasta. The goal is that of using the leather to make the vehicles of for the Chinese automaker.
