“European tanneries are becoming increasingly safe workspaces”

From 2019 to 2021 (without considering 2020 as statistically irrelevant due to lockdowns), work accidents in European tanneries decreased 16%. In Italy we know that from 2003 to today, they dropped 60%. Statistics are useful to better understand the results obtained in terms of workplace safety, and even more so to be able to identify what type of investments are needed to further improve it. “It’s important to implement due diligence practices on the leather supply chain – commented Gustavo Gonzalez-Quijano, general secretary of Cotance -. Workplace accidents are failures for all of us”.

Safety inside European tanneries

“Taking data from 7 European countries – explains Silvia Pedrana of UNIC – Italian Tanneries (in photo) -, in 2019 there were 1,317 workplace injuries, while in 2021 they were 1,101. This equals 16% less injuries obtained on the job and while travelling to and from the workplace”. The safety of tanneries’ employees was the object of the workshop Green Deal Leather – Towards Zero Adverse Impact of The European Leather Industry.

Organizing on September 19th as part of Lineapelle 102, were Cotance and industriAll as part of the Social Dialogue portion. “In 2021 injuries (minor) accounted for 3.2% of the total of 34,000 employees working in the segment – she continues -, down from the 3.4% of 2019”. Workplace safety is of course relevant today, both for the welfare and health of employees, but looking forward it becomes even more central. Improving the workplace safety of tanneries today, when the working population is getting older, means making the segment more attractive for young people as well.
