1,578 solar panels will cover a quarter of the energy demand of the tannery. On October 25 Oukro, a Dutch company specialised in calf salted hides, activated their solar panels: such investment is part of the plan, supported by Apeldoorn city council, which aims at shifting to renewable energy sources. “Our choice is very important to us and we agree on the demanding challenge promoted by the city council – comments Marcel van Leent, chairman at Oukro -. Entrepreneurial responsibility is our priority. We consistently strive to improve the sustainability of our work”. Oukro, a subsidiary of VanDrie Group meat holding, manufactures about 1,5 million leather units a year. Solar panels, which have been installed across an area of 3,900 square metres, will enable the company to save about 40,000 euros a year with regard to energy costs. Oukro has taken advantage of SDE+ incentives promoted by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs.
