Despite a very tough year for the global supply chain, there is one tanning industry that is smiling: Brazil’s, which can celebrate a 2024 budget in the positive area on all fronts. According to the reference association CICB, based on data compiled by SECEX, foreign sales grew 12.5% to $1.26 billion. So too are the export results in the positive area in value (+22.3%) and weight (+38.8%). The balance could have been even better, were it not for a slightly underwhelming December (-5.8% in value compared to the same month in 2023).

Speaking of the types of leathers, more than the export of finished leathers (-0.9% in value year-on-year), it’s the export of semi-finished leathers that determines the positive result: wet blue and split wet blue make +31.1% and +39.4%, respectively. Speaking of destinations, China, with Hong Kong, remains not only the top destination, but also among the most munificent with its +20.8% in value. The same cannot be said for the States (second on the podium), which reduces purchases by 6.5%, while Italy (third) increases purchases by 5.7%. The excellent results of Vietnam and Mexico (+69.8% and +26.3%, respectively) allow CICB to celebrate diversification. Fernando Bello, executive president of the association, describes the year just ended as “crucial”: “We have worked tirelessly on important issues, such as traceability, which lay the foundation for doing well in 2025 as well”.
