The merger operation would weaken the domestic ostrich market. So the South African Competition Commission said no to the merger hypothesis, announced last summer, between Mosstrich and Klein Karoo. As reported by the South African daily Die Hoorn, the two players are not giving up and are preparing to appeal. According to Johan Schoeman, CEO of Klein Karoo, the forecasts on which the Antitrust based their assessment “are not correct”: the merger, he said, will favour the ostrich supply chain in the long term, while the two companies’ slaughterhouses and tanneries will find the resources to be more efficient. The agreement signed provides for the merger to create a newco of which the two partners will be shareholders.
