140 years of research, history and innovation. 140 years to be narrated and celebrated. An important anniversary that on Saturday – February 8, 2025 – SSIP (Stazione Sperimentale per l’Industria delle Pelli e delle materie concianti) celebrated in grand style with an event at the Historical Archives of the Fondazione Banco di Napoli. The location is no coincidence, since these days (and until 21 February), it is hosting the exhibition Glove, Percorsi e Storie di Guanti a Napoli, curated by SSIP itself.
140 years of research
The history of SSIP began on February 8, 1885, when – with a Royal Decree by Umberto I – the reference research institute for the tanning sector opened its doors and began its activities. “For more than a century, our institution has been a beacon of innovation and expertise for the Italian tanning industry”, explains General Director Edoardo Imperiale. “On this special day, we turn our eyes to the past to honour our history and achievements, and look to the future with renewed determination and hope”. Words echoed by President Graziano Balducci and Gianni Russo, President of Lineapelle.
The history and the future
That of the SSIP (which moved from Naples to the Comprensorio Olivetti in Pozzuoli in February 2019) is “a heritage that must be defended”. Because, according to Fulvia Bacchi, general director of UNIC – Italian Tanneries and advisor to the research organisation, “SSIP today expresses a modern approach to research and innovation. An approach that has its foundations in the studies and activities of the many researchers who have given value to its history. Stimulating and accompanying the Italian tanning industry on a mutual path of continuous growth”.
