All the finalist projects will be exhibited at Fieramilano Rho from 22nd to 24th September 2021. In other words, during the next edition of Lineapelle where, particularly important, the award ceremony will also take place. We are talking about World Leather Contest, the first edition of the creative contest promoted in Italy by UNIC – Italian Tanneries and Lineapelle on the theme Real Leather. Stay Different. But the real decisive moment is now: because online voting is open.
The decisive moment of World Leather Contest
The World Leather Contest was attended by “three of the most internationally renowned Italian fashion schools: Istituto Marangoni in Milan, Polimoda in Florence and Accademia Costume & Moda in Rome”. In total: “Twenty-three finalist students” divided into “three categories of participation: Clothing, Footwear, Leather Goods. Thirty-one prototypes reached the final phase: that is, the voting phase”. There were two ways of voting for the winners. The first involved “a jury made up of teachers, stylists, journalists and industry insiders, who made their choice after admiring the finalist projects on display in Milan at Spazio Lineapelle in Palazzo Gorani”. The second is digital and popular.
Online voting
The second voting formula is “open to everyone until September 5, 2021. With a simple click here you can access the gallery of World Leather Contest finalist prototypes, discover the design history of each one and then vote”. For each category, one winner only will be awarded by the jurors, in addition to the one most clicked on by the online popular vote.
The finalists
“Each of the three participating fashion schools”, UNIC/Lineapelle explain, “has focused its educational and creative work on a product category. The 8 finalists in the Clothing category are students from the Master in Fashion Design Womenswear and Fashion Design Menswear at Istituto Marangoni in Milan. The 5 finalists in the Footwear category come from the Undergraduate course in Leather Technology at Polimoda in Florence, and have developed 13 prototypes. Lastly, for the Leather Goods category, 10 projects by 10 students from the 1st Level Academic Diploma in Costume and Fashion at the Costume & Fashion Academy in Rome have reached the final stage.
What we are talking about
World Leather Contest “is a real training project that invites participating students to create unique and innovative accessories and garments using leather only. Or, alternatively, by combining it with other natural materials. The aim is to explore new stylistic territories and applications of leather within 3 product categories, giving voice, space and visibility to the ideas of the creatives of the near future. And, first of all, to offer the new generations technical and cultural tools to understand and deepen the identity and value of leather”. The contest was born in 2019 from an idea of LHCA (Leather & Hide Council of America). The first edition involved, in addition to Italy, Leather UK for Great Britain, CLIA (China Leather Industry Association) for China, and TLIA (Taiwan Leather Industry Association) for Taiwan.
