Training without frontiers. Also from a cross-media point of view. Protagonists: Lineapelle and London College of Fashion which, in 2021, launched the creative “provocation” of the UAL Contest. A “provocation” not only because of what was required of the participants, but also because of the forced participation mode, due to the pandemic. The results of all this, with the crowning of the winners, were seen at the last edition of Lineapelle, held at Fieramilano Rho on February 22-24.
Training without frontiers
“UAL Contest”, explains Lineapelle, “involved 50 students from the BA (Hons) Cordwainers Fashion Bags and Accessories: Product Design and Innovation, and BA Cordwainers (Hons) Footwear: Product Design and Innovation courses at London College of Fashion, UAL”. Objective: “To explore ideas for accessories and footwear using leather in an innovative and sustainable way”. Twenty entries were submitted, all of them, due to Covid, in digital prototype format. Lineapelle put them on display and put them to the vote of “a jury of leather goods experts, stylists and insiders”.
The winners
The Footwear category was won by Daniel Charkow (left in photo). Sojin Oh (centre) and Apollonia Celentano (right) were joint winners in the Bags and Accessories category. Their success will now allow them to move out of the context of virtual design. In fact, Lineapelle explains, “the winning students will now have the opportunity to produce their physical prototypes”. They will also go on a tour of Italy, allowing them to visit manufacturing companies in the supply chain: tanneries, shoe factories, leather goods factories.
